Writing Philosophy
Writing is an important component to every classroom, especially an English class. It is a way for students to express themselves and work through their thoughts and feelings. Writing also teaches students how to organize their thoughts and how to back up their claims with evidence. There are two types of writing expressive and transactional writing. I believe students should learn both types of writing because both have merit.
Expressive writing is a great way to help students work through their reactions and thoughts to a piece of text and formulate a well thought out and developed response. To teach expressive writing, I would use creative assignments to engage students with the text. Such creative assignments would include, but not be limited to, reader response papers, group presentations, rewriting scenes from a new perspective, etc. These assignments help students focus on the content of their work. In other words, these assignments would be low impact grading on grammar and focus heavily on the content of the paper. Expressive writing teaches students to develop their vocabulary and the elements of creative writing such as a story line and a hook to pique readers’ interest.
Transactional writing is a great way to get students engaged with the text in a formal way. It teaches students how to get a message across to an audience in a formal, brief, and consistent way. I plan to teach students transactional writing through formal writing assignments. Some of these assignments would include, but not be limited to, analyses on characters and themes and comparison papers. These assignments would be graded equally on grammar and content. Through transactional writing, students will learn how to develop their vocabulary, provide claims and evidence, and focus on elements of grammar.
Writing plays a huge role in students’ lives; they communicate through text, statuses, blogs, etc. on a daily basis. Therefore, it is important for students to learn how to write. It is a teacher’s job to encourage students to write in and outside of school. Writing is a great way to engage students with the text and their lives. That is why I believe writing should be taught and encouraged.
